Combat Hero Bike build has donated 43 custom, adaptive motorcycles to severely injured Veterans and First Responders. President Ken Dugas and Bobby Henline, a bike recipient join us to share more.
The organization was established after John “Hardcharger” Barker and Ray “Too Tall” McDowell participated in a Run for the Wall cross country ride. In the spirit of our American military’s maxim that “we never leave a man or woman behind”, they recognized that there were many Veterans who would love the freedom of riding motorcycles but were no longer able due to their injuries. They presented the first bike in 2014.
Three weeks into his fourth deployment, Bobby’s vehicle was struck by an IED. Four crewmembers were killed and Bobby suffered severe burns over 50% of his body, He also lost his left hand because of the burns. A joyful spirit at heart, Bobby embarked on a career in stand up as “The Well-Done Comedian”. He also helps other Veterans live life to their fullest through his Bobby Henline “Forging Forward” Foundation.
Combat Hero Bike Build gave Bobby “Lucy”, an Army green three-wheel motorcycle. The paint scheme features purple flames in recognition of his Purple Heart from the burns and has the names of his fellow four crew members painted on the motorcycle. Bobby says “Lucy” has changed his life and rides whenever he gets the opportunity.
The organization plans to present another seven motorcycles this year. They also have planned several organized rides for the recipients and anyone else who wants to participate and share the freedom of the open road.
Combat Hero Bike Build is an all-volunteer organization. The motorcycles are donated before being customized. Ken says they rely on various skilled volunteers and generous donors to keep fulfilling their mission.
TAKEAWAY: “Combat Hero Bike Build is no longer just about the gift of a motorcycle; it’s about the journey that follows. We are building a support organization where our American Heroes can reconnect, ride and remain part of a family that never leaves a member behind.”
