When he landed back on his carrier, 263 holes were found in his plane.Because of the political ramifications, Royce was awarded a Silver Star and told to keep the mission secret..which he did for 50 years. In 2023 his Silver Star was upgraded to the Navy Cross - the second highest award for Valor.
