In 2006 Gina Elise became frustrated at news articles about under-funded Veteran’s healthcare and older Veterans who lay in bed day after day never receiving visitors. Inspired by her grandfather’s service in World War II she founded Pin-Ups For Vets to raise funds for hospitalized Veterans and brighten up Veteran’s days. Their calendar features female service members in vintage “Pin-Up” style photos.

Richard Evans earned the nickname “Eager” while an aviation cadet. He flew 54 missions in North Africa, Italy and other German held territory and one mission in Japan. He was selected to pilot the B-17 “won” by British General Montgomery in a bet.  His family has compiled his correspondence and personal recollections in a wonderful new book written by his daughter Barbara Kinnear.

When most young men his age would be graduating from college, Harper Coleman was wading ashore at Utah Beach, holding his 36 lb. machine gun over his head. He would go on to liberate Paris, fight in the Huertgen Forest and be awarded a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge.  A D-Day special with this wonderful 100 year old Veteran!

The B-17 Susan Ruth and her crew were shot down over Belgium on Feb. 8, 1944. Through meticulous research of personal correspondence, diaries and interviews, Steve Snyder has compiled the complete story of his father, fellow crew members and the brave members of the underground who helped them.

Steve began his career at the White House Communications Agency working in the Ford & Carter administrations. He then transitioned to the Secret Service. He was awarded his Green Beret in 1986. His book “Shadow Tier” is a real page turner!

In June of 1967, a special unit of volunteer, combat experienced pilots began flying special missions over Vietnam. Their call sign was “Misty”. Their mission was to fly low and fast, identifying and marking enemy targets in Laos and North Vietnam. The job was extremely dangerous – nearly a quarter of these pilots were shot down at least once.  Ross Detwiler flew 72 “Misty” missions, was shot down once and awarded three Distinguished Flying Cross citations.

Nate Boyer has reached the pinnacle in two careers. He wore the Army Green Beret and after “walking on” for the Texas Longhorns he would go on to be the oldest rookie in the NFL (Seattle Seahawks) at age 34.  As a veteran of both the military and athletic communities, he founded “Merging Vets & Players” to help both populations deal with their transition struggles.
